Differences

Differences

Michael Vincent Manalo creates some of the most fantastic concept photos. His characteristic style features open fields and wastelands that draw the mind to wonder. Placing objects and people in unusual landscapes and settings gives his work a dreamlike feel where reality is blurred.

Where were you born, where do you live now, any other background info?

I saw the first light in this world at Manila, Philippines on 1986. Right now, I live in a city in the Philippines called Quezon City.
Being artistic runs in my family, my mom being a singer and a cultural dancer. My brother being a painter and a 3d Artist and my sister who dances ballet, contemporary dances and hip-hop. My dad on the other side isn’t artistic, he is the sporty guy. He actually wanted me to be a basketball player but due to unforeseen consequences, I developed a fear of ball sports when I got hit on the nose by a basketball when I was 7.

How would you describe your work?

I would describe my work as something that comes from what I think about randomly everyday – from vivid and cloudy memories that have been merged with fantasy and mixed with an imagination from that of a child to surrealistic images that have been summoned from the deepest crevasses of my wild mind; from ordinary moments that I twist in the little forge inside my head to grand moments that leave me drooling during the blank pages of a day.

What processes and techniques do you use to create your work?

I use digital means to create my stuff

Are you a full time artist?

Unfortunately, not yet, I really hope to be a full-time artist soon enough.

How did you get started?

I used to draw a lot when I was a kid and then I started using pastels when I was a teen. I also tried using watercolor but I suck at it so I just drifted into another form of art which is music and then I got into photography after 4 years of being stuck and loving music-making. I started doing my craft a year after I fell for photography.

Any notable accomplishments?

I would say that I have accomplished the task of actually following what you want to do in life no matter how tough it is.

What artists inspire you?

There are a lot of great artists out there that have inspired me. The most notable is Salvador Dali for obvious reasons. Then there’s Michael Karcz from Poland whose works blow me away every time and Albulena Panduri from Albania. During the days when I started creating digital photo manipulations, the color of her works (especially how she treats the color blue) served as an inspiration for me.
