New Imagekind Contest

December 25th, 2006 admin Leave a comment Go to comments

Out of 100 FANTASTIC ways to improve our site we had to choose just one thought. It was not easy. In fact we’ve decided to implement many of the ideas you’ve given us. There were over 100 really good new features that you have provided!  Anyway it was Frank Melchior who gave us one that we thought was obvious enough to start with!

Let the members choose other members that inspire them!

And that’s what we’re going to do. You choose what other Imagekind member inspires you with their creativity. You can’t pick yourself :)   The winner gets a $200 gift certificate and the slot on the home page for a week.  Thank you all so much for making this project a lot of fun to work on.

Now I need to get back to work and implement some of those other great ideas!  We’re working on it!  In the next blog post I’ll give you a hint what the next big feature is that came from YOUR idea! In fact…we’ve already started developing it!!

That’s enough for now. Leave a comment to this blog post once you’ve found the artist on Imagekind that you really love and that’s all there is to it!!

Even though my style is really different from this artist, I would have to say that one of the most inspiring artists I’ve seen at Imagekind is APOSTOLOS. Here’s a link to his work:

    http://www.imagekind.com/Showartwork.aspx?IMID=4a30f6c9-5651-4580-a587-2db319be9dd6

Hope that link gets you there. He said in an interview at his website, that the baby pictured in the pram/stroller is himself among all of the other figures.

“The fall of Icarus” is HUGE! It is one of those majorly complicated works that covers the realm of Ancient Greek to Contemporary. This work, like all of Apostolos’s work tells a story and the execution of this work is superb!

Perhaps because I’m a big fan of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and other artists with “big storytelling scenes” that is why I appreciate the work of Apostolos, I think his work has this quality.

    Kind Regards,

    Nawfal Nur

    NO! NAW!! NO-O!!
Letting the members choose the members that inspire them is a BAD idea!! SAD IDEA!!
The members aren’t the BUYING public!! ONLY the customers saying what inspires the customers can generate sales. As I said before, an internal “Admiration Society” does not work.
What REALLY generates purchases is a “WHY NOT” button for the potential client to click on and give feedback. Feedback from member sources could make for more MUNDANE pieces that the customers do not like in the first place or wouldn’t buy. It’s what the CUSTOMER likes, as I said before, and NOT what the MEMBERS like and thinks it’s “inspirational” that counts. Inspiration from another’s work doesn’t necessarily generate QUALITY work from the worshiper, and that’s what matters.
Last, but not least, even choosing the most “inspirational” member, doesn’t necessarily say that the member is aiding in our production of QUALITY artwork that clients would buy. And what clients would BUY should be your FIRST and ONLY focus. Are you listening?
    nuff for now

James, if you ignore other artists, you’re cutting out a huge segment of your audience and future potential customers. Here’s a hint: people who make art tend to like art, and people who like art quite often buy art. I personally have a huge collection of other people’s work. Artists buy art. Nuff said. ;)

I agree with each comment and as a composite, all of the approrpiate factors are covered. Yes, the public buys art, but critical feedback from other artists is essential in order to grow. I have always learbed somehting from others who have a basis for their views, based on more than just gut feel “I like it”. Why something is liked is important. We need to hear from everyone to really advance. We all have something to say. Let’s listen.

One of my preferred artists on the site is Karen Thomas. Through framing and lighting techinques Karen Thomas displays the inherent rhythm of the objects she chooses to photograph. In “Line Abstract” the viewers eye is at once confronted with the desire to follow the line of the metal while at the same time, the lines become an abstraction, forcing us further into the triangular empty space between the wires. The strong diagonal which begins in the lower left hand corner and extends up to the right creates a dynamic tension with the repeating pattern of the metal frames.

An artist I have met through Imagekind.com that has truly inspired me is Wendy Puerto. Her beautiful skies are amazingly vibrant. Her style is a lot looser than mine, which has drawn me in. I recommend any artist interested in wide open skies take a look at her work.

I have to admit that Trey Ratcliff’s stuff just blows me away. His vision of the urban landscape just makes my jaw drop, the colors are so… BAM! Love the monkey in Across the Line.

I just came across Ron Patterson’s work. Very cool use of colors in creating animals in motion. Nice brush strokes, definately cool work.

I’ll keep looking, some really great artist on here.

    Cheers!

You know what’s a good idea? When you tell us about an artist, maybe include their url so we can go look at their work? Like Elise did above. Lots easier than searching for them.

I am inspired by every single person’s work here on Imagekind as I am inspired by so much of every detail that I come across in my life every day – To pick one person’s images over another’s would be a complete injustice (in my experience at least), since even if I am not as fond of one image over another at any particualr moment – there is always an inspiration ( fill (someone) with the urge or ability to do or feel something, esp. to do something creative) from everything that I see – How and why my mind processes that which I see and then how I am inspired is a process which I cannot even begin to understand let alone explain and therefore point out from whence a particualr inspiration came from.

I would much rather say that I am thankful for the ability to be able to see every image that I see here on imagekind as well as I am thankful to see most everyting that I do see along my adventures every single day –

    thank you!

Yes of course I would agree that inspiration of all kinds is essential and at the top of the list and one of the greatest things I enjoy in all my online areas is meeting and networking with other creators, however I think this is a great idea for a little further down the road. I read alot of the suggestions and some members really had solid issues for improving the template of this very young imagekind site. Ideas for improving downloads more control and better exposure in the mainstream area. Im not taking away anything from franks time here please understand, what imagekind thus far has created is a very nice mostly smooth template for loading art but on the backend it still needs work. Im confident they are on it however Im not confident in any substantial sales for at least one year. Anyway that being said I wish all artist nothing but the best for a creative new year. redboy gallo

Picking a favorite … that reminds me of when we were kids in elementary school asked to pick out a favorite color. It took me 6 years of creating art 12 hours a day to free myself from the blue I chose many years ago. I’m inspired by many of the artists on this site for all sorts of reasons and celebrate their, my, our successes …. whether it be via sales or promotions or simply listening or stepping up and giving voice. or, shees, i almost left this out … creating some amazing art. i also celebrate imagekind for the work imagekind is doing and encouraging us to get active, from a community standpoint.

  13. December 31st, 2006 at 10:17 | #13

I agree with Mr. Gallo. I was hoping for more along the lines of a “feature”. Something that would benefit us all and enhance our Imagekind experience.

Picking a favorite artist is a nice idea, and I don’t want to take away from it either. But I don’t feel that it’s strong enough to stand on its own. It doesn’t move ImageKind or us toward our mutual goals. So I can’t get too excited about it.

There were so many good ideas, and some of them seemed like they could be implemented reasonably quickly without much technical involvement.

For example, a themed contest. That would involve and interest many of us, and it doesn’t seem like it would be that difficult to set up.

And contests could eventually become specific galleries as a strong marketing feature for specfic industries, as was suggested earlier.

  14. December 31st, 2006 at 12:47 | #14

I can’t help but to notice that this contest is not going so well, not even the winner of the idea has named another artist, nor the artist that have defended the concept.

Out of 12 responses only 5 artist have been nominated. I think the money changed the dynamics of the whole idea. Or perhaps people would just prefer to see a fair and equal rotation of featured work.

I nominate Artist Kurt Ziegler. I love how he puts a surreal twist to his surf art. Here’s his url:

    Hi folks,

Make no mistake…we DID get some really feature ideas and we are working now to implement them. I’ll give you one clue! Somebody proposed the idea of smaller, lower cost frames. Brilliant! So, we are introducing a new framing engine with smaller sizes (4×6, 5×7 etc). And, we are working on a variant of the framing engine to let people design multi-opening frames (multiple images in a single framed object). Why are we doing this? Because we realize that we need to offer lower cost options for site visitors. Custom framing is expensive and our data tells us that a lot of shoppers get turned away at the price of custom framing by the time they reach the shopping cart.

There are many other great ideas we’ve borrowed to. I’ll post more about those soon!

As a nature and travel photographer I admit that there are many photographers that inspired me here in Image Kind and other locations, but one artist that immediately caught my attention is Helga Kvam.
    http://www.imagekind.com/GalleryProfile.aspx?gid=ce60e40a-3d43-4ed3-94ee-cac0ced88f79
Her images are simply a work of art. She mastered the art of capturing the light in her landscapes stilllife and nature photography in such a way that the images demand a second look. The image “in the storm” simply made me gasp. The mood and feel of this image is exceptional. Her compositions are beautiful, colors are vivid and vibrant and exposures are spot on. Looking at the portfolio as a whole one can see a common thread that can be seen as her signature art. Though her style is very different than mine it posses unique qualities that I can see myself applying some of her techniques towards my style of photography.

good morning and happy new year to all…..3 times i went to the front page today and each time was an artist in the feature section that after going to their gallery saw they actually had nothing posted as of yet…..think about that, how is this going to look to the buying public? it is things like this that need to be fixed before all of us creators start giving each other high fives. on other ocassions i have seen creaators in the feature artist link and after going there i see 2 or 3 pictures of somebodys cat…im not taking anything away from cats mind you some of my best friends are cats but i say get the feature artist front page link together and control it more, obviously it is just a random thing the software pulls in with no human eye aactually paying attention to it. the other thing thats quite disturbing is when i post new art i never see it listed in recent posting areas, i wrote to imagekind several times about this. i do not mean to make this thread a complaining thread if im in the wrong area for this kind of crituque somebody please guide me to the right one, im posting it here becasue of the winning suggestion that was finally decided upon and i feel before good suggestions like that are implemented the imagekind site should tighten ship and make themselves more like an art.com and not a zazzle.com. i read the admin post here by kelly and i do believe they are working on other things but as of now the feature artist area for my way of thinking in marketing needs attention now. good creative year for all, with respect gallo

mistake on my post above i meant too refer to POPULAR members link on homepage not FEATURE LINK.

  19. January 2nd, 2007 at 11:53 | #19

I have another suggestion. How about a section of the blog where we can make suggestions? Until the forum is completed, anyway.

  20. January 2nd, 2007 at 12:26 | #20

agreed with sarah schoenfeld, absolutely. i should like to add that i have been writing to imagekind directly thru the email address and their crew has been amazing with getting back to me not only at all hours of the day but all days of the week, this crew is devoted and im really impressed with their courteousy and professionalism. gallo

  21. January 2nd, 2007 at 13:23 | #21

We are definitely going to get the forum going very soon (like within a week – fingers crossed*). Until then, if there is a good consensus that you want me to open up a thread just for that, I will do so. Chime in, I’ll check back at the end of our day.

Gregory, thanks so much for your kind words about our devotion, it is really appreciated and it keeps us going forward. We have so much in the works right now, and this community and service is going to grow by factors this year. We do always hope that our members realize we take their questions and comments seriously, as that interaction is the guiding force here – and if we can’t get back right away, it’s usually because we are, well, catching up on some sleep – so hang in there and we will always get back to you. Thanks again.

I would like to see such a thread opened up. And I endorse all of Gregory’s comments above in all of his posts. I have also received a lot of help from the support team and I have a really good feeling about this site and its potential. I am inspired by everyone’s enthusiasm and love looking through some of the great art on the site – we all need to work together and have some patience to get some of the teething problems sorted out.

    Thanks everyone

I also agree with Gregory about Imagekind staff’s dedication and hard work. They always respond to emails very quickly, and often late at night. There is no doubt in my mind that they take their responsibility very seriously, both to the artists and the site.

Gregory, thanks for mentioning it and reminding me to give credit where it is very much deserved.

I would like to know how to add key words and tags to the landing page that a person arrives at after a after they click on the buy my art button provided by image kind which I had placed on my own web site –

    http://www.imagekind.com/GalleryProfile.aspx?GID=1c73e6c1-772a-4739-8abf-a952e47eb91a&P=1

Also – I am anticipating a tool to add the same keywords and tags to all of my images all at once – (currently somewhere around 2,350 images – heading for a little over 4,000 –

I am only half-way through putting up my first series of images but I can see how this is definitely going to be both a long term project and a lifetime of creative fun :-)

I also foresee that my presence on this particular ad page will draw some viewers to the imagekind site indirectly

    http://mostexpensiveinternetad.com/

I was concerned that my making continuous mistakes when placing the name on each of my Galleries would be a problem because of the inconsistencies (due to my spelling errors and omissions) – but I don’t want to let that distract me so I have dropped coorecting them as an issue for the time being and find that I simply have more and more images to implant on the imagekind site –

Also, by placing the imagekind button on all of the images in the Main Gallery:

    http://estore.websitepros.com/630795/Search.bok?category=Featured+Products

    of of my main website:

    http://www.575488trillion.com/

    - the button ends up being visible on way over 11,000 pages -(perhaps on 22,000 to 30,000 pages) in addition to the few pages on the front end of my website –

Now – back to the uploading process –

    thank you!

    Walter

  25. January 3rd, 2007 at 17:14 | #25

Oh – one more thing –

It might be helpful to have the link to an artist’s personal web site page open in a separate window so that the visitor to the imagekind site is not lost if the accidentally close the window and don’t have the imagekind site still open –

I thought I would be inspired by a photographer since that is what I am. But I am easily able to say that Laurie Davenport, a painter, inspires me. Her works breathe life and are full of energy and being. The colors are vivid and the subject matter is always thought provoking.
