Getting Social with Imagekind

We consider Imagekind a rapidly growing community within itself, giving artists of all stripes tools to meet others with similar styles and creative interests. You can find new fans for your work, get inspired by others, and learn about the business of art with other’s trying to revolutionize the way artists represent themselves. Heck, we even have a pretty happening Forum.

However, we’re still pretty young, and we realize there have been plenty of other artist based social communities around for a while - we’ve even featured a few in these digital pages. And then there are the big two - the one’s who put “Social Networking” on the map, ant least the virtual map. MySpace, and Facebook - you know what they are, but do you know how useful they are for artists? And can you find Imagekind and it’s friend’s network on these sites?

So how useful are these networking based communities for artists working with Imagekind? The answer, is very, very useful. One of our fellow coworkers here in the office is actually a member of a decently popular band here in Seattle. There is a pretty powerful secret to be found looking at the road bands have traveled on their way to self-publishing success and “indy” status. Basically, music and video have paved the way for other visual art mediums to break out on their own, online. We knew the timing was right so we created Imagekind. But there are many other tools out there for a working artist trying to make it - and conceptually, rule #1 for anyone trying to break into anything is: go network.

Our musician friend swears by MySpace (if reluctantly), and even Facebook as it has opened up to accepting anyone as a member. These networks are a big part of the way bands do business these days. Practically all the booking is done via MySpace, and let’s face it, you’d be hard pressed to find several thousand fans finding you from all over the world on a typical monthly artwalk. So the moral of the story is that this type of networking makes a difference, even if it might seem silly at first. And maybe you already knew that - but the part that you may not have realized is that networks of photographers and artists are almost just as big as the music networks.

How do we know? Well, we’ve been diving in ourselves. Yes, Imagekind has a profile on both MySpace and Facebook. The results are pretty amazing. Once you start building a large and trusted network, nearly any action you take on these sites will garner you more fans, and even sales.
