Well, it’s nearly the middle of March (already!) and this month is shaping up to be a math enthusiasts dream come true. Almost as exciting as an accountant with an oversized calculator. Not only was it square root day (3/3/09) a few days ago, tomorrow is Pi day (3/14)!

Leaving all horribly cheeky puns aside, pi day is the celebration of the day that best represents the approximation of pi: 3.1415926…

To help celebrate, I thought I’d share some Imagekind members who are truly making an art out of Math. Now that’s a pun worth it’s digits in the equation (come on, like worth its weight in salt… anyone?). Anyway…

Stefanie Posavec created a series of images based on the project “Writing without Words” for her final year in the MA Communication Design course. Breaking the novel On the Road by Jack Kerouac down by “the structure of [the] novel and its punctuation, parts of speech, and words per sentence were used to generate the final complex patterns”

History Shots Graphics creates “award-winning graphics that tell stories about subjects, time periods and events.” By adding together the number of verses per book of the Bible and stringing these together with the 63,779 cross-references found within, Chris Harrison, a Ph.D. student in the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University created one of the most compelling visual representations of the Bible. This print was named “one of the best science images of 2008 by the National Geographic News.”
