Friday Favorites – Self Portraits and Google

  • Google Buzz

Friday Favorites is a weekly feature on the Imagekind blog where I share some of my favorite things found on – or related to – Imagekind over the past week. Sometimes there may be many, others, perhaps a few. It might be a single print, an artist, a group of artists, an article, different art styles; who knows! In any case, check out some of the cool happenings around Imagekind every Friday on the blog.

Self-Portraiture Group

Though Van Gogh may have one of the most famous self-portraits of all time, it hasn’t stopped others from trying their hand at it!

The self-portraiture group was created just this week and I really like the idea. It gives us a view into who the artists are. There are some fantastic members who have joined so far and I hope to see even more in the coming weeks. The moderator, Bethany Helzer describes the group this way:

self portraiture. pretty simple. so please don’t post photos of other people, okay? it doesn’t just have to be of your face. it can be of the feet, hands, or any other part. show us who you are :)

Here are a few of my favorite images in the group so far:

Google invited some of their “creative friends” to help them make short films about their web browser, Google Chrome. Imagekind member artist Christoph Niemann was one of those. Here is what Christoph said about his video:

I wanted to find a simple metaphor that explains what a browser does, without showing a screen, a keyboard, the letters WWW, pixels, zeroes or ones.

Initially I thought of my mom (the browser) who brings me (the user) a plate of spaghetti bolognese (the Internet). But since spaghetti bolognese is not a rewarding thing to draw, let alone animate, I went for the next best metaphor, which can be seen in the animation.”

Nice work Christoph! You can see the videos here, and make sure to check out Christoph Niemann’s artwork for sale on Imagekind.

Make sure to check back next week for more cool happenings in the art world and Imagekind art community!
