Admit it, when you hear the term Folk Art, you conjure up images of flea markets, street fairs, and farmers markets.  While it is true folk art is derived from indigenous cultures or otherwise laboring tradespeople, it has crept its way into the mainstream and has many names including, naive art, Arts Primitive, Pop art, outsider art, traditional art, Tribal art, self-taught art and working art.  Unlike fine art, folk art is primarily utilitarian and decorative rather than purely aesthetic and in contrast to other art genres, there is no set style which is associated with folk art.  Perhaps one of the most famous folk artist, though some of you might disagree, was Vincent van Gogh. His uncomplicated and minimalist style  has been the inspiration for many artist who paint in this style. Though often overlooked, folk art is an  important category and shouldn’t be ignored.
