Stunning Illustrator and Graphic Design Artist Michael Wandelmaier
Michael Wandelmaier is an illustrator and graphic designer who currently lives and works in Toronto, Canada. Though formally trained as a civil engineer and geologist, Michael has chosen to pursue a career in the arts. He uses both traditional and digital media in his work.
Where were you born, where do you live now, any other background info?
I grew up in Ottawa, Canada, but moved to Toronto after university to work as a graphic designer. I currently live and work in Toronto with my girlfriend, artist Jessica Fortner.
How would you describe your work?
I have a hard time describing my work. My drawing style is derived from wanting to draw comic books when I was a kid. I usually hope to explore ideas in a humorous and explorative way. I’m really interested building scenes that feel like part of a much longer story.
What processes and techniques do you use to create your work?
I do the line drawings on Bristol with graphite pencil. Then scan it into Photoshop where I do all the coloring. So really, it’s a mostly digital end-product. I make giclée prints of personal work, but mostly, the pieces only exist in their published form.
Are you a full time artist?
No, I work a a full-time graphic designer in a studio here in Toronto. I do illustration work as much as possible outside of my design job. I view the two as complimentary. I sometimes do illustration for my studio design projects, and my design knowledge always helps in my illustration work. It can be challenging to manage two creative careers time-wise, but it keeps me involved and refreshed creatively.
How did you get started?
I did editorial illustrations for the school paper at university. That’s probably the first time I did drawings for money. Otherwise, I started just over two years ago. I decided I wanted to have a go at illustration and did a few sample pieces, put up a website and sent out some postcards.
Any notable accomplishments?
I’m still really proud of having been included in Fantagraphics book Beasts! Book 2. The art director there, Jacob Covey, was really cool about having an open call for submissions for a few of the illustrations in the book, and I was luck enough to be included.
Where can we find more info and keep up with your work?
My illustration portfolio is wandelmaier.com, also I have a collaborative blog with my girlfriend, artist Jessica Fortner, at squidfaceandmeddler.blogspot.com (called Squidface and the Meddler). We both post news, and work in progress there.
What artists inspire you?
I love the work of (to name only a few) Tomer Hanuka, Yuko Shimizu, David B., Max Beckmann, Paul Pope, Tara McPherson, Teetering Bulb, Sam Weber, Moira Hahn, and Jessica Fortner.
