God Laughs
High on a hill in perpetual night he sits, ancient, alone, surrounded by marbles of varying sizes and hues - some striped, some solid, some pitted, some smooth; he pays them no attention. He stares out into the void, head cocked as though waiting for a signal in a silence so thick as to be almost palpable. Suddenly a flare of light illuminates the sky; bits of something, glittering like Venetian glass, spray in a kaleidoscope of color across the far horizon. Seconds later the sound follows, a huge bang that echoes with a babel of voices crying out, whether in terror or sorrow or both it is impossible to tell. He laughs and claps his hands as though applauding a particularly good performance. When the last of the light and sound have been swallowed by the inky blackness he reaches out, chooses a marble and stands. Squinting, he stares straight ahead, drawing back his arm, then the marble is flying out into a sky no longer silent; it radiates with a soulless humming. As it spins the marble grows larger and as it disappears, he sinks back down, smiling, as it becomes another world. ~ copyright 2015 RC deWinter
