My Great Adventure
This morning was unlike any other. I awoke to music - strange, otherworldly, almost electronic but not quite, yet harmonious - uncountable, unquantifiable notes woven into a seamless soothing hum that drowned the sound of the sea.
My body felt different - fluid, insubstantial, as if I could lift my arms and fly. The room itself had changed, with no sense of the dread that usually greets me, no skinprickling chaos freefloating from corner to corner.
Looking out I saw it tranquil, that sea - usually a monster unleashed from Neptune's bestiary - barely rippling in dawncloud gauze. Only small wavelets betrayed I was not gazing at a canvas, and even they stopped their dance and became still as glass.
Puzzled, I sat back down on the edge of the bed. Everything began shimmering. Limned with a nimbus of every color bleeding into no color, every object in the room glowed; every cell in my body shifted and kept shifting, infinitesimal jewels in a living kaleidoscope, singing in harmony with the music.
Just as I felt I would fly apart everything stopped - the music, the shimmer, the shifting - replaced by a whirlpool of black that seemed to suck every bit of energy from everything. As I lay down, too weak and dizzy to do anything else, I realized, as my eyes closed for the last time, I had woken up dead. ~ copyright 2015 RC deWinter
