Conceptual Art Prints and Posters | What a Concept

August 25th, 2010 2 comments

I like Conceptual Art for the mere fact, it makes you think. Like in a David Lynch film, there is only the basic outline of a plot; the conclusion is up to the viewer. The genre can manifest in many different forms – not only painting, but photography, music and installments of objects in a gallery.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono

John Lennon and Yoko Ono

While she is best known as the widow of John Lennon, Yoko Ono rose to great prominence in the 1960s as a conceptual artist. One of Ono’s most popular pieces was a step ladder that led up to a spyglass hanging from the ceiling. When someone reached the top and looked at the ceiling through the spyglass, the word “Yes” appeared in small letters.

While conceptual art was a popular movement during the swinging 60s, the roots of the style date back to the early 20TH century. Credited for getting the ball rolling was French artist Marcel Duchamp whose seminal piece, “Fountain” in 1917, which was simply a photograph of a urinal basin signed by Duchamp, was rejected by the Society of Independent Artists in New York. This ultimately turned out to be a catalyst piece for many aspiring conceptual artists.

Here are some examples of conceptual prints & posters by some fresh faces carrying on in the tradition of  Marcel Duchamp and Yoko Ono.

25 Awesome Generative Art Prints on Imagekind

August 24th, 2010 11 comments

Realitivly new to the art world, Generative art refers to art that has been generated, composed, or constructed in an algorithmic manner through the use of systems defined by computer software algorithms, or similar mathematical or mechanical or randomised autonomous processes. It is a system oriented art practice where the common denominator is the use of systems as a production method. To meet the definition of generative art, an artwork must be self-contained and operate with some degree of autonomy. The workings of systems in generative art might resemble, or rely on, various scientific theories such as Complexity science and Information theory. The systems of generative artworks have many similarities with systems found in various areas of science. Such systems may exhibit order and/or disorder, as well as a varying degree of complexity, making behavioral prediction difficult. However, such systems still contain a defined relationship between cause and effect. The result of creating art this way is close to abstract impressionism. These elements make Generative art an exciting genre and with new technologies being developed daily, this form of art will be limitless.

Art of the Week | Smoulder by Sandhi Schimmel Gold

August 20th, 2010 2 comments

Showcasing one awesome art print each week

Sandhi Schimmel Gold’s work and life are interesting to say the least.  She has been painting since before she could read. A highly educated artist,  Gold attended Arizona State University where she received  a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting.  She did her Graduate Studies at ASU – textile & surface design and UCLA – fine art.  She furthered her studies at the New School in New York and did Mosaic studies & workshops: Italy, Turkey and Cyprus. Not limiting herself to any one genre, Gold uses many techniques.  In her Women series, she often uses a technique she dubbed Acrylic Mosaic Fusion.  The result of this is unlikely color combinations with a textured feeling.

Bokeh Binge Week - Day 1: 14 Points

Basically, Bokeh is the technique of blurring a photographs background for artistic and aesthetic purposes. Photographers can do this through photographic techniques, such as adjusting the depth of field, or through digital enhancements (faux-bokeh as it’s been termed) outside of the camera through photo editing software.

Good Bokeh photographs can be very beautiful. Bad Bokeh is not. If you want to learn more techniques on how to improve check this post on the Digital Photography School, How to Achieve Better Bokeh – 4 Simple Tips.

Neoclassicism Art Prints and Posters – Old School Art

August 3rd, 2010 1 comment

While searching for art, it easy to forget about the Neoclassicism art movement, but one should not overlook the importance or the beauty of these classic pieces. Dominant in the mid-1800s to the late 1900s, Neoclassicism drew upon western art and culture and affected decorative and visual arts, literature, theater, music, and architecture. While the movement hit its peak two centuries ago, it is still influential in the 21st century, especially in architecture in the United States and Great Britain.
