<p><strong>Where were you born, where do you live now, any other background info?</strong></p>
<p><strong><span id="more-2101"></span></strong>I grew up in Ottawa, Canada, but moved to Toronto after university to work as a graphic designer. I currently live and work in Toronto with my girlfriend, artist <a title="Jessica Fortner Art" href="http://JessicaFortner.imagekind.com/Illustrations" target="_blank">Jessica Fortner</a>.</p>

<p style="text-align: center;">
<div class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 235px"><a href="http://www.imagekind.com/Clippings_art?IMID=18727db5-d7f9-4885-82c4-38a34b58c476" target="_blank"><img class=" " style="border: 1px solid black;" title="Clippings" src="http://thumbs.imagekind.com/member/fef60afb-37c3-4ed7-8213-a55212ec19bc/uploadedartwork/450X450/18727db5-d7f9-4885-82c4-38a34b58c476.jpg" alt="Clippings" width="225" height="450" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Clippings</p></div>
<p><strong>How would you describe your work?</strong></p>
<p>I have a hard time describing my work. My drawing style is derived from wanting to draw comic books when I was a kid. I usually hope to explore ideas in a humorous and explorative way. I&#8217;m really interested building scenes that feel like part of a much longer story.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">
<div class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 460px"><a href="http://www.imagekind.com/Squidface-and-The-Meddler_art?IMID=93c63843-b24b-4120-82cc-6f81f9483d1e" target="_blank"><img class=" " style="border: 1px solid black;" title="Squidface and The Meddler" src="http://thumbs.imagekind.com/member/fef60afb-37c3-4ed7-8213-a55212ec19bc/uploadedartwork/450X450/93c63843-b24b-4120-82cc-6f81f9483d1e.jpg" alt="Squidface and The Meddler" width="450" height="450" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Squidface and The Meddler</p></div>
<p><strong>What processes and techniques do you use to create your work?</strong></p>
<p>I do the line drawings on Bristol with graphite pencil. Then scan it into Photoshop where I do all the coloring. So really, it&#8217;s a mostly digital end-product. I make giclée prints of personal work, but mostly, the pieces only exist in their published form.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">
<div class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 460px"><a href="http://www.imagekind.com/Tailypo_art?IMID=195664ce-6787-4243-88b3-f1f1b9840bb8" target="_blank"><img class=" " style="border: 1px solid black;" title="Tailypo" src="http://thumbs.imagekind.com/member/fef60afb-37c3-4ed7-8213-a55212ec19bc/uploadedartwork/450X450/195664ce-6787-4243-88b3-f1f1b9840bb8.jpg" alt="Tailypo" width="450" height="450" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Tailypo</p></div>
<p><strong>Are you a full time artist?</strong></p>
<p>No, I work a a full-time graphic designer in a studio here in Toronto. I do illustration work as much as possible outside of my design job. I view the two as complimentary. I sometimes do illustration for my studio design projects, and my design knowledge always helps in my illustration work. It can be challenging to manage two creative careers time-wise, but it keeps me involved and refreshed creatively.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">
<div class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 460px"><a href="http://www.imagekind.com/Something-Fishy_art?IMID=def5dfb0-fdbd-463f-9009-ee10393d7bf0" target="_blank"><img class=" " style="border: 1px solid black;" title="Something Fishy" src="http://thumbs.imagekind.com/member/fef60afb-37c3-4ed7-8213-a55212ec19bc/uploadedartwork/450X450/def5dfb0-fdbd-463f-9009-ee10393d7bf0.jpg" alt="Something Fishy" width="450" height="281" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Something Fishy</p></div>
<p><strong>How did you get started?</strong></p>
<p>I did editorial illustrations for the school paper at university. That&#8217;s probably the first time I did drawings for money. Otherwise, I started just over two years ago. I decided I wanted to have a go at illustration and did a few sample pieces, put up a website and sent out some postcards.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">
<div class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 291px"><a href="http://www.imagekind.com/Fashion-Fauna_art?IMID=4e8e7d03-b705-41a9-aa58-9b2fe34b7cd1" target="_blank"><img class=" " style="border: 1px solid black;" title="Fashion Fauna" src="http://thumbs.imagekind.com/member/fef60afb-37c3-4ed7-8213-a55212ec19bc/uploadedartwork/450X450/4e8e7d03-b705-41a9-aa58-9b2fe34b7cd1.jpg" alt="Fashion Fauna" width="281" height="450" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Fashion Fauna</p></div>
<p><strong>Any notable accomplishments?</strong></p>
<p>I&#8217;m still really proud of having been included in Fantagraphics book Beasts! Book 2. The art director there, Jacob Covey, was really cool about having an open call for submissions for a few of the illustrations in the book, and I was luck enough to be included.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">
<div class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 235px"><a href="http://www.imagekind.com/Bailar-Con-Los-Muertos_art?IMID=ae33257a-ebaa-482e-a7f3-b60223d4ec9a" target="_blank"><img class=" " style="border: 1px solid black;" title="Bailar Con Los Muertos" src="http://thumbs.imagekind.com/member/fef60afb-37c3-4ed7-8213-a55212ec19bc/uploadedartwork/450X450/ae33257a-ebaa-482e-a7f3-b60223d4ec9a.jpg" alt="Bailar Con Los Muertos" width="225" height="450" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Bailar Con Los Muertos</p></div>
<p><strong>Where can we find more info and keep up with your work?</strong></p>
<p>My illustration portfolio is <a title="wandelmaier.com" href="http://www.wandelmaier.com/" target="_blank">wandelmaier.com</a>, also I have a collaborative blog with my girlfriend, artist Jessica Fortner, at <a title="squidfaceandmeddler.blogspot.com/" href="http://www.squidfaceandmeddler.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">squidfaceandmeddler.blogspot.com</a> (called Squidface and the Meddler). We both post news, and work in progress there.</p>
